قام وزير الخارجية الأميركى أنتونى بلينكن الجمعة بزيارة غير معلنة إلى العراق حيث التقى رئيس الوزراء محمد شياع السودانى لإجراء محادثات حول مستقبل سوريا فى أعقاب انهيار حكومة بشار الأسد أمام جماعات المعارضة المسلحة.
تأتى زيارة بلينكن ضمن جولة فى الشرق الأوسط بعد التطورات السريعة فى سوريا. وتسعى إدارة الرئيس جو بايدن التى تقترب من نهاية ولايتها، إلى تشجيع جماعات المعارضة المنتصرة على تشكيل حكومة شاملة تحمي الأقليات وتجنب سيطرة الفصائل الإسلامية عليها.وقال بلينكن خلال زيارته للسفارة الأميركية في بغداد إنه ناقش مع السودانى قناعة العديد من الدول بأن سوريا خلال انتقالها من دكتاتورية الأسد إلى الديمقراطية يجب أن تضمن حماية الأقليات وتشكيل حكومة غير طائفية مؤكدا أن سوريا لا يجب أن تصبح قاعدة للإرهاب.
وأضاف بلينكن: لا أحد يفهم هذا أكثر من العراق بسبب التهديد المستمر لتنظيم داعش فى سوريا ونحن مصممون على ضمان عدم عودته.
وذكر مسؤول أميركى لرويترز أن واشنطن ترى فى هذه اللحظة فرصة لتقليص نفوذ إيران فى االمنطقة

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Friday made an unannounced visit to Iraq, where he met with Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani for talks on the future of Syria in the wake of the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government before armed opposition groups. Blinken's visit comes as part of a tour in the Middle East after the rapid developments in Syria. The administration of President Joe Biden, which is approaching the end of its term, seeks to encourage the victorious opposition groups to form an inclusive government that protects minorities and avoids control by Islamic factions. Blinken said during his visit to the US embassy in Baghdad that he discussed with the Sudanese the conviction of many countries that Syria is during its transition from a dictatorship. Assad called for democracy to ensure the protection of minorities and the formation of a non-sectarian government, stressing that Syria should not become a base for terrorism. Blinken added: No one understands this more than Iraq because of the continuing threat of ISIS in Syria, and we are determined to ensure that it does not return. A US official told Reuters that Washington sees at this moment an opportunity to reduce Iran's influence in the region.
